…are often close neighbours. As much joy as we get from Yogi, he unfortunately has been causing us some serious worry recently.
First time last week on Friday and then again yesterday he displayed some scary signs. He would suddenlly have spastic fits, his legs would be all over the place and he would make mad fearful dashes around mixed with whining, panting and shivering. We had no idea what it could be. First time I went to the 24 hour vet, not recommendable as it costs an absolute fortune but they couldn’t help. Yesterday I managed to still go to my usual vet and they said we would have to do further blood tests. There are two possiblities that look likely, I hope it’s the first rather than the latter. It could be hypoglycemia, which is when the dog has too low suger levels, so it’s like diabetes. This isn’t good but can be dealt with fairly easily it seems. The other option would be liver shunt, which would be much worse and require an operation to close the artery that passes the toxic blood around the liver into the system.
And despite best efforts to insure the little fellow, he managed to get this all in the inbetween time. So although the 24 vet bill should be mainly covered by his initial puppy insurance that his breeder set up for the first 4 weeks, any further treatment he needs for this we have to cough up, as I arranged him to be covered by a different insurance a week before his other one ran out and the problem occured again in the one week inbetween where his last one has expired and the new one doesn’t cover him yet as they have this silly 14 day rule. Meaning in the first 2 weeks of him being insured he isn’t covered for any illness, injury and whatever and of course whatever this turns out to be it will be treated as a pre-existing condition and they won’t pay a penny towards his treatment.
Gladly, he recovers fairly quickly after a few hours and I personally think it’s likely to be the hypoglycemia. He hasn’t eaten all his breakfast and lunch and I then stupidly went for a walk to pick Ian up before feeding him and he displayed this right after we got home.
Anyway, whatever it is, we love him so much and won’t give up on him, although it will hurt financially.
On the positive side, he slept in the bed between us all night feeling all cosy and secure and we went for a fantastic walk at Wimpole Hall. He thoroughly enjoyed playing with a SchnauzerĀ - off lead for the first time and walked wonderfully next to us not in the slightest interested in running off too far. We fed him of course right away when we got back to the car and I just gave him some canned Hill’s food when we got home to ensure he is topping up his calories. He is currently snoozing happily on the sofa ignoring the Rugby on the telly and the mad Irish man next to him who randomly shouts at the screen.
I am off to the shops now to get something nice for us to eat and to buy a bin for Yogi’s bagged poo. Joy!
